Water Tank Usable Capacity, Levels and Storage in South Africa
A capacity number is useful only when its shape, measurements and operating levels are clear. Separate ideal geometric volume from actual product specifications and accessible water.

Internal dimensions and nominal tank capacity
Use internal dimensions rather than external catalogue dimensions. Wall thickness, ribs, domed ends, tapers, fittings and irregular bases can make the real tank different from the ideal geometric shape. A manufacturer’s nominal capacity is a product specification and need not equal the result from a simplified external bounding shape. Check the actual model label, current manufacturer data and any level-to-volume calibration chart. This independent calculator is not an official JoJo sizing tool and does not replace manufacturer capacity information.
Brim, maximum fill and accessible stored water
Geometric brim capacity uses the full internal height or diameter. The entered freeboard is vertical space below the brim that remains unfilled, so maximum filling depth equals full depth minus freeboard. Current water depth cannot exceed that maximum. The minimum draw-off depth represents water below the usable outlet or pump limit. Maximum accessible storage is volume at maximum fill minus volume at minimum draw-off. Currently accessible water is current volume minus minimum draw-off volume, with a lower limit of zero. These are geometric planning quantities, not guaranteed pump performance.
Multiple tanks and entered daily demand
The tank count multiplies all results for identical tanks with the same internal geometry, water depth and outlet assumptions. Different tanks need separate calculations and their usable volumes can then be added. An optional daily water-use figure divides currently accessible litres by entered litres per day to give a simple storage-duration estimate. It assumes no replenishment and a steady demand. It does not predict rainfall, leaks, household behaviour, water quality or service reliability. No universal normal household tank size or mandatory daily consumption is assumed.
Rainwater, underground tanks and fire storage
For rainwater harvesting, tank capacity is one constraint; roof catchment, rainfall, collection losses, demand and starting level determine actual yield. Use the separate rainwater tool for entered rainfall estimates. Underground placement does not change a shape’s volume formula, but the tank must be designed and installed for that use. Fire-water reserve, flow rates and system duration require the applicable project design; a geometric volume result does not establish adequate fire protection. This tool does not size foundations, excavation support, pumps or structural supports.
How to measure or check a tank safely
Use reliable drawings or accessible measurements and a suitable level indicator. Do not enter a tank to measure its inside: confined-space entry needs appropriate specialist arrangements. An internal survey or manufacturer calibration is preferable when the shape is irregular. Fish tanks use the same rectangular water-volume arithmetic, but substrate, decorations, equipment and actual water level reduce water volume; this tool does not subtract those items automatically. Stored water is not automatically potable, and this capacity calculation does not assess treatment, hygiene or drinking-water suitability.

Frequently asked questions
Is usable capacity the same as brim capacity?
No. Freeboard and minimum draw-off level can reduce accessible storage. Real product geometry and fittings can change it further.
Does this calculate rainwater collection?
No. It calculates storage geometry. Use the rainwater harvesting calculator for roof area, rainfall and entered collection efficiency.
Can it confirm fire-water tank capacity?
It can estimate ideal geometric volume but cannot approve a fire reserve, flow rate or compliant system.
Which gallons are shown?
US liquid gallons and Imperial gallons are labelled separately. They must not be treated as equal.
Can I use outside tank dimensions?
Use internal water-holding dimensions. External dimensions can overestimate volume and do not replace the actual model specification.
