Practical guide
How Many Bricks per Square Metre?
Bricks per m² depend on the actual wall-face dimensions, mortar joints and number of leaves. A 222 × 73 mm face with 10 mm joints gives about 51.932 units/m² before waste.

Quick answer: calculate bricks per m²
Divide 1,000,000 by the product of installed face length and installed face height, in millimetres. Installed means the brick dimension plus one repeating joint. For a 222 × 73 mm face with 10 mm joints: 1,000,000 ÷ (232 × 83) = 51.932 bricks per square metre of one leaf.
Why 52 is a guide rather than a universal count
About 52 stock bricks per square metre is a useful approximation for that face and a 10 mm joint. At 12 mm joints, the same geometry gives about 50.277. Neither number describes every South African brick, mortar gauge or laying bond. Product-specific coverage is preferable when its assumptions match the work.
One leaf and two leaves
Two matching leaves use roughly twice the one-leaf count for the same net elevation area. A cavity is empty space between the leaves, not another row of bricks. If the visible face and backing leaf use different units, calculate each with its own dimensions instead of doubling one rate.
From coverage to an order
For 21 m² at 51.932 units/m², the unrounded requirement is about 1,090.57 bricks. Apply 10% waste to that underlying quantity, giving about 1,199.63, then round up to 1,200. Round to packs only after this step. Do not round coverage up for every square metre and then apply waste if you want the geometric method used by the tool.
Where the simple formula stops
Corners, piers, bonds with headers, gables, shaped units and special details can need a more detailed take-off. The table compares repeating modules, not a structural specification. Check the laying arrangement and supplier order before purchasing.

Frequently asked questions
How many stock bricks are needed per m²?
For a 222 × 73 mm face and 10 mm joints, about 51.932 for one leaf before waste. Confirm the actual unit and joint.
Are face bricks counted differently?
The quantity follows their installed face dimensions. Face and backing leaves can use different products and should then be counted separately.
Is waste included in the coverage table?
No. The table is for one leaf without waste. Apply your waste allowance to the full project quantity.
