Use the right scale before choosing a programme
APS means Admission Point Score. The National Senior Certificate, or NSC, records percentages and achievement levels, but universities do not all turn those results into the same total. Some use six subject levels, some weight selected subjects and others add percentages. This parent calculator provides a clear standard estimate and helps you find the correct university tool.
Before comparing a programme target
Your six academic entries are separate from Life Orientation. Extra academic subjects can be added; the strongest eligible six are selected after any required subjects are retained. If you enter an NSC mark of zero, it belongs in the lowest level rather than being treated as a missing field.
Worked example for a general APS
Illustration only: the six academic marks are 64%, 58%, 71%, 62%, 53%, 77%, with Life Orientation at 70%. This form returns 30 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.
How to calculate APS from six NSC subjects
Convert each included percentage to the NSC level and add the six levels. The bands are 80-100 = 7, 70-79 = 6, 60-69 = 5, 50-59 = 4, 40-49 = 3, 30-39 = 2 and 0-29 = 1. Life Orientation is excluded from this general estimate. Do not assume that a university uses this same table: Wits has additional weighting, NMU uses percentages and Stellenbosch calculates an average.

Terms used in these calculators
NSC means National Senior Certificate. An achievement level is the band assigned to a subject percentage. APS means Admission Point Score. Life Orientation is a separate school subject whose admission contribution depends on the method. A faculty groups related university programmes. Home Language and First Additional Language describe the levels at which a language was studied; they are not interchangeable labels for the same school result.

Frequently asked questions
What does this APS calculator calculate?
A general APS estimate adds the NSC achievement levels of six academic subjects, excluding Life Orientation. University methods differ, so choose an institution-specific calculator before comparing an admission threshold.
Does this result confirm admission to a university?
No. This is a calculation, not an offer. Programme subject minima, qualification endorsement, additional selection and available places must be checked separately.
Does Life Orientation count for APS?
It is excluded from the calculation displayed here. For a general-estimate page, that is a planning convention rather than a confirmed university rule.
Is the same APS accepted by every university?
The displayed method was reviewed on 15 October 2026. Confirm the applicable intake and exact programme requirements before applying.
