How to Calculate Foundation Cost in South Africa
Estimate foundation cost from measured quantities and current itemised quotes. Keep concrete volume, excavation volume, other allowances and VAT on a consistent basis.

Quick answer: use separate quantities and rates
Foundation budget = final concrete order volume × its quoted rate + separately measured excavation volume × its rate + whole-job allowances. Add VAT only when excluded from every entered amount, then any intended contingency. The foundation calculator includes this quote-based result.
Do the concrete take-off first
Measure the specified concrete sections and remove duplicated overlaps. Review extras, deductions, allowance and supplier increments. The price input is applied to the final order volume because that is the quantity used in the estimate, rather than only the smaller measured volume.
Excavation is not automatically the concrete volume
A trench may be deeper or wider than its concrete footing and may include other layers or work space. Obtain a separate excavation take-off where that cost is quoted per m³. Entering a rate without a measured volume is not enough to produce the excavation amount.
An illustrative foundation budget
Suppose the concrete order is 1.6 m³ at R1,500/m³, giving R2,400. A separate 2.4 m³ excavation at R200/m³ adds R480. Other entered allowances of R1,120 make a R4,000 subtotal. These example prices explain the arithmetic; they are not current supplier or contractor rates.
VAT and contingency
If every illustrative amount excludes VAT and you enter an additional 15%, R4,000 becomes R4,600. A 10% contingency on that amount gives R5,060. If quotes already include VAT, add no extra VAT. Ask suppliers to restate mixed-basis quotes before using the simplified form.
Check what each quote includes
Reinforcement, formwork, labour, delivery, pump hire, inspection or professional fees and site-specific work can change the total. Enter whole-job allowances only once. A zero field means no cost was included for that item, not that it is unnecessary. Avoid adding labour or delivery again if a supplier’s rate already includes it.
Compare the same scope
Use the same dimensions, foundation specification, access assumptions, VAT basis and exclusions for each quote. The calculator cannot assess ground conditions or retrieve current prices. Confirm the full scope with the responsible contractor before treating the budget as a project commitment.

Frequently asked questions
Does the tool show a standard foundation cost per metre?
No. It uses your actual quantities and quoted rates. A single national rate can omit important differences in the job.
Why is excavation a separate input?
Its geometry can differ from the volume filled with concrete. A separate measured quantity avoids silently using the wrong volume.
Are the example rates current prices?
No. They are explicitly illustrative figures for a worked calculation.
