Half-weight Life Orientation is programme-scoped
The University of Mpumalanga BEd Foundation Phase rules describe seven prescribed subjects with the Life Orientation achievement rating divided by two. Half points are therefore meaningful in this calculation. A Life Orientation level of five contributes 2.5, not five and not zero. The academic entries still use their normal one-to-seven ratings.
Before comparing a programme target
The method is confirmed here for that named teaching programme. It is not presented as an automatically verified formula for every UMP degree or diploma. Applicants considering law, agriculture, commerce or another field should check whether the same treatment applies before comparing a threshold. For teaching, the language of learning and teaching, the additional language and the mathematics route remain separate subject conditions even when the points total appears sufficient.
Worked example for UMP
Illustration only: the six academic marks are 72%, 64%, 71%, 64%, 56%, 70%, with Life Orientation at 71%. This form returns 35 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.
How to use the UMP APS calculator
Start with one consistent set of school results for University of Mpumalanga. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.
Planning your UMP application
Use the full qualification name when making a UMP shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
