Overall APS and health preselection are separate

SMU applicants can encounter more than one score on the same admissions page. An overall seven-subject APS may be listed alongside an admission score based on selected subjects for preselection. Counting all seven and then comparing that result with a five-subject threshold creates a false impression. Use this form for the seven-subject calculation only, and keep the separate selection score outside it.

Before comparing a programme target

Choose the specific health qualification before checking the result. Medicine, radiography and nursing can use different combinations, minimum levels and selection procedures. Life Orientation is included in this model, but its inclusion does not establish that all other programme requirements are satisfied. Final Grade 11, final Grade 12 and other applicant categories can also be assessed differently. No medical programme admission decision is generated here.

Worked example for SMU

Illustration only: the six academic marks are 66%, 58%, 68%, 66%, 65%, 76%, with Life Orientation at 82%. This form returns 37 points. The result uses the displayed method, not a programme admission threshold. Read the table to see each included subject and its contribution. Change one academic mark at a time to see whether it crosses a points band or changes a percentage-based total. A higher elective only displaces another subject when that other subject is not compulsory.

How to use the SMU APS calculator

Start with one consistent set of school results for Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. Enter six academic percentages, choose the correct subject names and identify each language level. Add further eligible academic subjects only if you actually completed them. Mark programme-required subjects so they remain in the selected set. Enter Life Orientation in its own field. Select Calculate and check the included-subject column before reading the headline. Copy or print the result if you want a record for your application planning.

Planning your SMU application

Use the full qualification name when making a SMU shortlist, and record the intake alongside it. Do not copy an application fee, closing date or minimum from a different intake. A page about admission points does not establish that applications are open. Keep the application confirmation, submitted school results and any programme-specific documents together. If a selection condition is unclear, resolve that point before treating a score comparison as a completed application check.
