How to Plan Toll Costs for a South African Trip

One-way toll total = sum of all applicable plaza charges. Trip tolls = one-way total × journey multiplier. Share per person = trip tolls ÷ people.

Updated 14 October 2026

Worked example (illustration only)

The full N3 Class 1 mainline set effective 1 March 2026 is De Hoek R67, Wilge R94, Tugela R100, Mooi R70 and Mariannhill R16.50. These add to R347.50 one way, R695 return, or R347.50 each for two people on a return trip. Entry and exit points can change which plazas apply.

Check the inputs

Obtain the charges for the exact plazas and vehicle class from the operator. Enter them separated by commas. Select one way or return on the same road. Enter people sharing and the date of the tariff. Vehicle class is a label for your quoted charges; it does not change them automatically.

What to check before relying on the result

Only the entered charges. Different vehicle classes, ramps and shorter routes have different charges. Do not multiply a toll total that already includes return. The default N3 set is a dated illustration and is not a route finder.

Where to check tariffs

Use the official SANRAL schedule or the relevant concessionaire. Tariffs were adjusted effective 1 March 2026. Check for later changes before travelling; the calculator does not download tariffs automatically.
